For Brian Lo, the future of digital health is about more than technology.
As Project Manager, Strategic Digital & AI Initiatives at Unity Health Toronto, he is focused on a bigger question: how can digital innovation help create a healthcare system that is easier to navigate, more responsive to people’s needs, and better equipped for the future?
That vision earned Brian the 2026 Digital Health Canada Future Leader Award, recognizing his leadership and contribution to Canada’s evolving digital health landscape.
Reimagining healthcare possibilities
For Brian, receiving the award represents more than a personal achievement. He sees it as a reflection of the mentors and colleagues who have supported him throughout his career and helped shape his belief in the potential of a digitally enabled Canadian healthcare system.
“We have an opportunity to move beyond digitizing existing processes, but instead reimagine how care is delivered, how it reaches people, and how it empowers them.”
That distinction is central to Brian’s approach. While healthcare has made significant progress in adopting digital tools, he sees an opportunity to think beyond simply replicating existing processes in digital form. Instead, he envisions a future where digital health is seamlessly embedded into everyday life—not confined to clinics and hospitals, but supporting patients, families, and communities wherever they are.
Simplifying processes
Achieving that vision requires addressing one of healthcare’s most persistent challenges: complexity.
Healthcare can still feel fragmented and difficult to navigate, even as the system becomes increasingly surrounded by data, digital tools, and new innovations. Brian is particularly energized by the opportunity to bring those elements together in ways that make care more coherent and useful.
He works alongside clinical and informatics leaders to rethink care models, with a focus on making them more proactive, personalized, and sustainable. For Brian, some of the most exciting possibilities lie in using digital tools not simply to collect more information, but to transform that information into insights that clinicians can trust and patients can act on.
A mission of human-centred care
Looking ahead, Brian hopes to help shape a Canadian healthcare system that is truly digitally enabled and future-ready—one where technology supports care that is more precise, equitable, and human.
But he sees collaboration as essential to making that future possible. The complexity of healthcare cannot be solved by any single organization, profession, or technology. It requires partnerships across the digital health community and a willingness to rethink how the system works as a whole.
Brian’s vision reflects what makes the Future Leader Award so meaningful: leadership in digital health is not only about understanding where technology is going, but about imagining how it can be used to create a healthcare system that better serves people.
As he continues his work at Unity Health Toronto and within Canada’s broader digital health community, Brian is focused on turning that vision into reality—and helping more Canadians access the care they need, when and where they need it.
