CAN/HSO 83001:2025 Virtual Care – Public Review
Health Standards Organization (HSO) is developing a new edition of CAN/HSO 83001 Virtual Care National Standard of Canada. Until September 22, 2025, HSO is inviting feedback from patients, caregivers, health care professionals and others with an interest in safer care.
By synthesizing and updating content from the CAN/HSO 83001:2018 Virtual Health and HSO A83001:2017 Telehealth standards, we reduced the criteria from 119 to 41 — a 65 per cent reduction.
The need and demand for virtual care and services grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to rise as essential elements of an effective health care system. The pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual care and services, highlighting the need for an updated standard that reflect new insights and technological advancements. At the same time, changes in legislation, regulations and governance across jurisdictions has reshaped how virtual care is delivered.
This new edition of the standard addresses key benefits and risks of virtual care and services that affect high-quality care, including access, privacy and security, digital health literacy, the integration of artificial intelligence, and the overall quality and safety of care.
