Dr. Marion Lyver here. I’m a long-time Digital Health Canada member and former Digital Health Canada Board member. I’m reaching out now as an equally long-time member of ISO Technical Committee (TC) 215 on Health Informatics through the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO which is under the auspices of the Standards Council of Canada.
For the past 15 months I’ve been an expert member of the ISO TC 215 Task Force on Telehealth and Virtual Care (TVC). The TF report with recommendations for ongoing standards work in TVC was published in Feb. 2025. It can be found at this link
Going forward, I’m looking to pass the torch to fresh and innovative Canadian experts in TVC. An abstract of the current published ISO TVC standard 13131:2021 – Health informatics — Telehealth services — Quality planning guidelines can be found here (LINK). All work for ISO committees, including TC215, is done on a volunteer basis but as a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee you would be eligible to have expenses covered to attend twice yearly meetings of the Technical Committee which occur in various places around the world with colleagues from over 27 countries.
A new Management Systems Standard for TVC has been proposed via the TF report. The ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 quality and environmental management systems standards are the most well-known Management System Standards and adopted by millions of organizations worldwide (check this link for more information). These standards help organizations improve their performance by specifying repeatable steps that organizations consciously implement to achieve their goals and objectives, and to create an organizational culture that reflexively engages in a continuous cycle of self-evaluation, correction and improvement of operations and processes through heightened employee awareness and management leadership and commitment.
Here are the type of experts and skills sets we are seeking for the upcoming work which will be undertaken by a new WG of ISO TC 215.
- Experts who can lead or contribute to transposition of the current ISO 13131:2021 standard to an updated management system standard.
- Experts who can assess the proposed maturity model for TVC services from a global perspective, understand what is out there from WHO and others, and decide how an ISO maturity model for TVC services would support the management system standard and be usable in different countries. The eHealth architecture maturity model elaborated in ISO 14639-2 was leveraged for the proposed TVC model. Find an abstract of this standard at ISO/TR 14639-2:2014 – Health informatics — Capacity-based eHealth architecture roadmap — Part 2: Architectural components and maturity model
- Experts who, on an ongoing basis, can scan active and proposed standards work items across TC 215 WGs and advise on how those standards should consider hybrid care, if applicable. Some of these work items may be very technical in nature so technical expertise will be needed to support and help elaborate relevant TVC services that should be addressed and incorporated into other standards being implemented or updated in TC215.
