John Sutherland is the Director of the Centre for Advanced Medical Simulation (CAMS) at NAIT, where he leads strategic direction and fosters key collaborations to advance healthcare education, workforce development, and health innovation through simulation-based education, external training, applied research, and innovation services. With a strong background in business development, industry partnerships, and innovation strategy, John works closely with healthcare professionals, educators, innovation ecosystem contacts, health innovators, and other stakeholders.
Prior to joining CAMS, John played a pivotal role at Mitacs, supporting NAIT’s applied research and work integrated learning programs to secure significant funding and experiences for student internships. Additionally, his experience with NAIT includes various roles in entrepreneurship, student recruitment, fund development, applied research, and marketing, providing him with extensive background in fostering industry-academic collaborations. With a passion for healthcare innovation, simulation technology, and experiential learning, John is committed to positioning CAMS as a leader in simulation-based education and training, applied research, and innovation services.

Emilio Violato is a Research Associate with the Centre for Advanced Medical Simulation (CAMS) at NAIT, where he specializes in research and innovation services to support health innovators. His work focuses on usability testing and validation of medical devices, digital health technologies, and other healthcare innovations through advanced high-fidelity simulation.
With a background in psychological, cognitive science, and medical education research, Emilio brings expertise in quantitative methods, statistical analysis, and human behavior research to health innovation. He has contributed to various publications, exploring topics such as behavioral compliance in healthcare, competency assessment, and the role of psychology in medical training.
Before joining CAMS, Emilio worked as a Freelance Psychological Researcher, conducting research in cognitive and health psychology, and completed an internship at KU Leuven’s COPS Cognitive Psychology Lab during his Master’s studies in psychology. His diverse research experience allows him to bridge the gap between human factors, simulation, and health innovation, helping digital health innovators optimize their technologies for real-world use.
