Why is this role important?
The Senior Analyst plays a key role in organizing and leveraging the pan-Canadian data CIHI holds. This may involve data management, developing and maintaining data and information standards (e.g., methodologies, indicators, and statistics), preparing relevant documentation, providing client support, assessing data quality, producing statistics, fulfilling custom data requests, supporting migration of existing SAS programming code into the Python language, conducting analysis, and contributing to analytical reports and indicator development.
Note: This posting may be used to fill similar positions in the Health System Performance Branch or Health System Analytics Branch.
What you’ll do
- . Conducts environmental scans and literature reviews to support the development of reports, statistics, and indicators.
- Works with the Lead and other members of the analytical team to manage CIHI data, ensuring it is fit for purpose, and to support the production of key deliverables for internal and external dissemination. Key deliverables include relevant documentation, data tables, custom data requests, and topical analytical reports.
- Performs advanced qualitative and quantitative analyses on data from administrative databases and other sources (e.g., surveys).
- Supports the development of coding best practices, specifically in python.
- Writes analytical reports, briefing notes, fact sheets and presentations, including developing figures and tables to present key findings to a variety of audiences.
- Supports the development of comparable and actionable indicators to accelerate improvements in health care, health system performance and population health by identifying data sources for health system indicators, determining how indicators will be calculated and providing advice on data quality.
- Understands CIHI’s databases, related health data held by other organizations, and how to access these databases and related analyses.
- Prepares presentations, technical documents and reports that supports stakeholder use, access and understanding health system data, indicators, and information to improve the performance of Canada’s health systems. This includes seeking advice from subject matter experts and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provides methodological advice and mentoring to other members of the analytical team.
- ‘Ensures adherence to, and ability to demonstrate compliance with, CIHI’s privacy and security policies and procedures when using CIHI data and information.
What you’ll bring to the table
- An undergraduate degree in epidemiology, statistics, health services research or similar fields. A graduate degree would be an asset.
- 3 – 5 years of experience analyzing large and complex data sets including manipulating, maintaining, and preparing data analyses. Specific experience with data on aging would be an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of programming languages required; experience with Python or R would be an asset.
- Strong communication skills. Specifically, the ability to present effectively, write for a variety of audiences and communicate technical and analytical information effectively and in an engaging way.
- Strong organizational skills. Able to manage projects, including multiple projects at once. Able to work on a team and alone, and with minimal supervision.
- Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to analyze and combine data and information to produce insights and knowledge that stakeholders can put into action.
- Fluency in English required, bilingualism in both official languages is an asset.
