Why is this role important?

The Senior Analyst, Clinical Administrative Databases, has an important role in the production of key deliverables related to the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD), National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS), and the Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB) databases at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Major activities include preparing updates to analytical products, processing data, participating in ad-hoc/media requests and creating data quality documentation. The Senior Analyst may also participate in expert advisory committee meetings and make presentations to stakeholders as required.

What you’ll do

  1. Leads and maintains all phases of annual data updates, including the production and updating of relevant documentation, updating and executing SAS code and/or migrating an existing SAS code to Python, and preparing data tables for release and dissemination.
  2. Ensures accuracy and continued improvement of databases through activities such as the review/investigation of data quality issues, and effectively addressing these issues in the documentation.
  3. Assists with the methodological development of new analyses. Writes and executes SAS code required for the development, computation, analysis, and/or verification of data in analytic or data quality reports.
  4. Prepares related documentation as required, including technical documentation and interpretive text.
  5. Works with other members of the team supporting the analysis and dissemination of health information statistics, including but not limited to data verification and preparation of data for publication.
  6. Provides analytical support to respond to media and other ad-hoc data requests and special studies. Liaises with key stakeholders to fully define data and/or analytical requirements
  7. Participates in the design of test strategies/test cases, develops code and scripts and provides analytical support to ensure accurate and comprehensive testing of upgrades and enhancements to data collection and reporting systems.
  8. Develops and maintains detailed knowledge of data and tools (e.g. SAS, Python, R, Excel) used to produce standard and ad hoc outputs.
  9. Ensures adherence to CIHI’s privacy and confidentiality of health information principles and policies when using and disseminating information.
  10. Contributes to key activities of the Acute and Ambulatory Care Information Services branch as required, including coordination of activities with the other program areas.What you’ll bring to the table

What you’ll bring to the table

  • Undergraduate degree in Health Sciences, Health Informatics, Statistics, Social Sciences or a related field. A graduate degree would be an asset.
  • Three to five years of experience working with relational databases / large datasets, including manipulation, analysis, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with data manipulation and statistical software, including SAS, Python, R, or other statistical software is essential
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to develop data quality measures and resolve data anomalies and discrepancies.
  • Experience in use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven time management skills, and the ability to prioritize responsibilities and work effectively to meet deadlines is essential
  • Ability to work independently and self-learn.
  • Previous experience working with DAD, NACRS or HMDB data would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required, and bilingualism in both official languages is an asset.
