The Digitally Empowered Patient

A digitally empowered patient uses technology to take an active role in effectively managing and advocating for their health and care. While the healthcare sector has yet to fully adapt to the digital world, patients’ desire for access to digital health information and services is palpable. To this end, the Digitally Empowered Patient Community of Action was created to meet the following objectives:

  • Identify programs and approaches that are breaking through the barriers to change
  • Incent change by providing actionable advice for patients, providers, and all other stakeholders

We engaged patients, healthcare providers, system leaders and vendors across Canada to gain a diverse perspective on the barriers to widespread access and adoption of digital health tools and services. We supplemented these interviews with a literature and marketplace review, a conference presentation, and a web-based survey, and summarized our findings into five themes.
