Spotlight on Start-Ups

New ventures are essential to industry innovation, and the Canadian digital health landscape has a number of emerging technology players to watch. Today we’re focusing on MEMOTEXT, Reliq Health, and Self Care Catalysts – what they offer and why they became Digital Health Canada Entrepreneur Members.

MEMOTEXT applies the power of Machine Learning to empower patients to achieve their healthcare goals and improve the bottom line for healthcare stakeholders. Effective digital engagement is complex. Our experience has taught us that by combining an empathy and evidence-based design methodology we can build impactful digital health engagements. We provide both ready-to-go and customized/specialty digital health programs, that are standalone interventions or can seamlessly integrate into existing systems and workflows.

Making a positive impact on patient health

One of our biggest goals is to increase awareness about our digital health interventions and machine learning capabilities. Our pilot and clinical trial program all boast high retention and engagement rates with our users. We make a positive impact on patient health and to healthcare communities of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and COPD.

What changes would you like to see happen in the Canadian digital health landscape?

We would like to see more integrations of care providers with digital patient engagement programs. These types of interventions link caregivers and care providers to patients and increase the likelihood of successful treatment management.

As Digital Health Canada members, we hope to make some lasting and meaningful connections with other SMB’s like us. To be able to enhance our offering and partner with other industry movers and shakers to make a difference in the digital health landscape.

Reliq Technologies is a Vancouver based healthcare technology company that specializes in developing innovative, secure mobile health and telemedicine solutions for Community-Based Healthcare. Our iUGO Care digital health solution provides high quality virtual care in the community by creating a “virtual hospital ward” within the patient’s home, automatically collecting vital signs and encouraging and tracking medication adherence. iUGO Care’s unique interactive voice technology provides patients with audible alerts and reminders to take their medications, collect their vitals using Bluetooth-enabled monitoring devices and perform prescribed rehab or fitness activities. iUGO Care’s two-way voice hub provides voice-activated access to patient education content, empowering patients and family members to proactively manage complex chronic conditions. Reliq’s iUGO Care cloud platform instantly alerts the clinical care team if a patient develops key warning signs, allowing clinicians to intervene before a health crisis occurs, preventing costly and disruptive hospital readmissions and ER visits.

Focus on helping front line care workers

Having reached profitability in December 2017 we are focusing our efforts on helping front line care providers in the US who are serving the over 37 million Medicare and Medicaid patients who have two or more chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure. This market will continue to grow as the population ages and expands, and as pressure from lawmakers and insurers to reduce healthcare spending increases.

What changes would you like to see happen in the Canadian digital health landscape?

We look forward to working with the Canadian acute, primary and community sectors as well as patient partners to innovate and demonstrate the value of connected home monitoring for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers across the continuum of care.

Reliq Health looks forward to working with Digital Health Canada members as collaborators in the pursuit of connected, patient centered care in the community.

Self Care Catalysts is a patient solutions, intelligence, and analytics company deriving value from patient-centered real-world evidence to inform product life cycle management and behavior change interventions. By mapping human health behaviour, we can accelerate drug development, reduce research and development costs for new drugs, and enable personalized healthcare through the use of various technologies including behavioral science, AI and blockchain.

Our belief is that when patients are informed, respected, and engaged, they make better choices. Better choices mean better health outcomes. Therefore, it is important that patients’ views are well-represented in healthcare research through the generation of real-world evidence. Our mission is to promote self-care behaviors among patients, while enabling patients to contribute their behavioral data to support important research across the product lifecycle, such as drug discovery, precision medicine, and development of support services and programs that are specific to the community.

Empowering patients to own their health data

Our biggest goal at Self Care Catalysts is to empower patient’s ability to build, own and share their personal health data. This started in 2015 with creating Health Storylines, a personal repository for patient data, and continued in 2017 with EMR and wearable integration. In 2018/2019 we are focusing on data-sharing by unveiling our Provider Storylines. This will allow patients to share their personal data with their healthcare providers or clinical trial coordinators. Our goal is to improve data-sharing and data integration by expanding our partnerships with local government and academic institutions.

What changes would you like to see happen in the Canadian digital health landscape?

Within the Canadian healthcare system, patients are treated as merely recipients of care; however, as patients gain access to more information, they are being equipped to become real advocates of their own health. Self Care Catalysts will continue to drive this empowerment within the community such that patients in the near future to become owners of their own health and health data.

Through membership with the Digital Health Canada community, Self Care Catalysts hopes to connect with fellow innovators within the realm of healthcare and work together to pioneer improvements for the Canadian healthcare system.
