Why is this role important?
The Health System Analytics branch develops policy-relevant information that support health system decision-makers on a variety of topics pertaining to Canada’s health care system.
Working within the branch’s matrix model, the Senior Analyst will be part of an analytic team which compiles, verifies and analyses data for indicators and disseminates the results to diverse audiences. In this role the Senior Analyst will use their knowledge of Python and R programming languages to conduct analysis, perform data quality checks, streamline existing programming code, and help with client requests.
What you’ll do
1. Performs qualitative and quantitative analyses on data from administrative databases using R and Python.
2. Participates in the development of coding best practices and migration of existing analytic code to python/PySpark and R programming languages.
3. Develops and maintains detailed knowledge of data, tools and analytical techniques used to produce standard and ad-hoc outputs.
4. Provides methodological advice and mentors other members of the analytical team.
5. Conducts data management activities including writing and updating statistical code required for the development, computation, analysis, and/or verification of key deliverables. This may include support for the release of data and information through private and public reporting tools, including leading the execution of test strategies / test cases to ensure accuracy of the reported results in adherence with CIHI’s corporate information quality framework.
6. Assists with dissemination of health indicator data, including, but not limited to, data verification and preparation of the data for reporting.
7. Identifies data sources for health system indicators, helps determine how indicators will be calculated and provides advice on data quality.
8. Understands CIHI’s databases, related data held by other organizations, and how to access these databases and related analyses.
9. Prepares and maintains technical documentation. Prepares other relevant documentation and summaries as required.
10. Ensures quality of products and activities are aligned with CIHI standards (e.g. quality, privacy, etc.)
11. Ensures adherence to, and ability to demonstrate compliance with, CIHI’s privacy and security policies and procedures when using CIHI data and information.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the table
An undergraduate degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, Informatics, Data Science, Computing Science or similar fields (or equivalent experience).
• Three to five years of experience in data analytical activities including data visualization, statistical analysis, and data pipelines.
• Advanced experience with Python (PySpark) and R programing languages to manipulate data and draw insights from large datasets. Working experience with SAS is an asset.
• Demonstrated experience manipulating and analyzing large, complex databases
• Experience designing and building analytical solutions using good software engineering practices (e.g. code optimization, version control).
• Familiarity with high performance computing is an asset.
• Strong communication and writing skills. Specifically, the ability to write for a variety of audiences clearly, as well as the ability to effectively communicate technical and analytical information.
• Strong organizational skills. Able to manage projects, including multiple projects at once. Able to work on a team and alone, and with minimal supervision.
• Strong critical-thinking skills, as well as excellent attention to detail.
• Understanding of Canada’s healthcare system is an asset.
• Fluency in English required, bilingualism in both official languages would be an asset.
