May 28, 2020 – Data-Driven Scorecards for Educating Physicians about their Pathology Laboratory Utilization: A Choosing Wisely Initiative to Optimize Healthcare Resources – Presented by William Van Woensel, NICHE Research Group, Dalhousie University
Inappropriate laboratory test orders increase healthcare costs and compromise patient safety. Our goal is to inform physicians about the “appropriateness” of their test ordering behavior, and, in doing so, effect positive change in their test ordering behavior. We analyze laboratory utilization data, using machine learning and semantic reasoning methods, in order to generate physician order profiles that present personalized laboratory utilization metrics, based on comparisons with “peer” physicians having a similar case-mix. We developed an AI-driven platform, Pathology Laboratory Utilization Scorecards (PLUS), which allows physicians to self-examine their laboratory utilization metrics as compared to their peers. We applied our approach on “big” data, including over 6-years of primary care pathology test order data. PLUS is operational and aims to optimize the utilization of the Central Zone pathology laboratory of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
