SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday - Achieving a connected health data system: The current state in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by Roche Canada and developed by Santis Health\, the Achieving a connected health data system report provides an independent assessment of data connectivity across Canadian provinces. Analysis confirms that while digital foundations exist\, Canada lags significantly behind international peers in capitalizing on them. Often\, electronic data remains siloed and practically inaccessible for care or research. \nWe will explore how provinces can leverage shared learnings to overcome fragmentation and transition from data custodianship to stewardship\, ultimately improving health systems for all Canadians.

SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday - Transforming Radiology Referrals in Primary Care: The Impact of Implementing a Clinical Decision Support System in Québec
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we’ll explore how Santé Québec implemented the OrderWise Clinical Decision Support platform by MedCurrent\, A VitalHub Company. The objective of the project was to support radiology referrals in primary care across multiple regions to improve efficiency\, align with local clinical guidelines\, and reduce costs. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nProvincial roll-out strategy – multi-regional implementation integrated with the provincial Service d’Acheminement de Formulaires Informatisés et suivis de Requêtes (SAFIR) platform.\nClinical content integration – leveraging national\, provincial and local radiology referral guidelines from the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) and l’Institut National d’Excellence en Santé et Services Sociaux (INESSS).\nImplementation challenges – IT complexity\, competing priorities\, physician engagement\, and French-language adaptation.\nTangible results – improved quality and efficiency of diagnostic pathways; 6% of orders canceled as non-appropriate\, saving ~$750K annually per 40\,000 referrals.\nLessons learned & path forward – perspectives from Santé Québec and MedCurrent.\nNational implications – how Québec’s model can inform a pan-Canadian CDS strategy.\n\nJoin us to see how digitized\, evidence-based diagnostic referrals are transforming patient care and health system performance in Québec—and how your health system can benefit.

SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday - Pan-Canadian Document Ontology: You should use it too!
DESCRIPTION:Documents distributed by hospitals or exchanged between clinics in the community need to be classified. Most primary care clinics in Canada are already struggling with unclassified documents that need to be re-labelled and filed manually. This will worsen when community clinics begin sending documents digitally. Using a document classification system will automate filing and enable consistent and useful document titles. It will also reduce time spent by physicians opening new documents and finding old documents. BC is using a document classification system that is achieving these benefits and CIHI is making a pan-Canadian version. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Ian Bekker (Island Health)\, will explain what the document classification system is that BC is using and how other health systems can make one themselves. \nLearn more: \n\nAn FP’s quest for meaningful medical document titles

SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday - Using AI-assisted POC Ultrasound to Help Early Screen TMJ Arthritis in Children
DESCRIPTION:Arthritis is the most common chronic disease in Canada\, placing a tremendous burden to the health system. From the 6 million Canadians living with arthritis\, around 700\,000 are in the province of Alberta. It affects 1 in every 1\,000 Canadian children. In this disease\, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is almost always the first joint involved. This joint connects the lower jaw to the skull\, allowing the mouth to open and close. TMJ arthritis in children can cause devastating facial deformities compromising daily activities such as speaking and chewing. Since there is no cure for the damage caused\, it is important to detect and treat this condition early to prevent lifelong jaw problems. \nAccessible\, cheaper and safer imaging is needed to diagnose and treat TMJ arthritis early to avoid the costs\, delays and need for sedation related to MRI images\, which is used to diagnose this condition. Ultrasound (US) is safer\, more comfortable for children and cheaper for the health system. Not to mention\, its portability that allows its use in diverse health care facilities\, including rural communities and remote areas. However\, the challenge is that US requires significant training and expertise to interpret the images. \nWe are developing an AI-assisted image analysis tool to be integrated to a portable handheld ultrasound to help screening TMJ arthritis in children. For this\, we will scan the joint of children diagnosed with arthritis in the main children’s hospital of Alberta. These images will then be used to develop the AI assisted image-analysis tool. This innovative tool will overcome existing barriers and improve health by advancing digital health. \nFebruary Webinar Wednesdays are sponsored by Merge

SUMMARY:Fellowship Knowledge Translation Webinar with Dr. Jaason Geerts
DESCRIPTION:Fellowship Knowledge Translation Webinar with Dr. Jaason Geerts\nCalling out the Leadership B.S.: A Research Journey Towards Gold Standardsalling out the Leadership B.S.: What the Evidence Actually Shows \nThe title\, “Calling out the Leadership B.S.”\, plays off Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeffer’s book\, which scathingly exposes many widely accepted but false leadership beliefs. The bulk of conventional leadership wisdom in best-selling books at the airport and even in academic journals\, Pfeffer argues\, is at best misleading\, usually wrong\, and frequently harmful. \nThis may explain why\, despite the great impact that outstanding leaders and leadership can have on people\, organizations\, communities\, and beyond\, far too many leaders and leadership development programs underperform or fail. \nOver the course of his academic career\, Dr. Jaason Geerts\, CCHL Fellowship candidate and Vice-President of Research and Leadership Development for the College\, has taken a similar approach to investigating central leadership questions and debunking common beliefs and misconceptions. \nThe purpose of calling out the B.S.\, cultivating gold-standard evidence\, and creating resources for research and practice has been to contribute credible scholarship to fill key knowledge gaps\, and\, most importantly\, to support world-class leadership\, care\, and outcomes at home and abroad. \nDuring this interactive webinar\, Dr. Geerts will address several key leadership myths\, such as: \n\nThe myth about who should lead: veterans\, volunteers\, MBAs\, etc.;\nThe myth about “evidence” in the field;\nThe myth about leadership development (which is nearly always just leader development);\nThe myth about diverse teams; and\nThe myth about leadership organizations (which are nearly always not).\n\nFor each topic\, we will discuss: \n\nThe key question or majority belief (myth)\,\nWhat the research actually says – calling out the B.S.\, and\nKey applications or takeaways.\n\nFollowing the presentation\, there will be time for audience questions. \n\n\nFees\nThe event is free to attend\, but pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday - Enabling Digital Transformation in Ambulatory Care: A People and Process Approach to CIS Implementation
DESCRIPTION:This presentation offers an overview of Alberta’s implementation of the Connect Care clinical information system in ambulatory care\, with a deliberate focus on the people and processes that enable meaningful digital transformation. Rather than emphasizing technology\, the session underscores the pivotal role of governance\, strong sponsorship\, stakeholder engagement\, and visible leadership in navigating complex organizational change. It highlights the value of inclusive stakeholder engagement strategies—such as collaboration with patient advisors and user groups—to ensure solutions are grounded in frontline and patient experience. At the heart of the presentation is a comprehensive change management approach\, featuring practical tools like communication frameworks\, the importance of end-to-end workflow demonstrations\, and patient safety review sessions\, all designed to build confidence and readiness. The discussion also outlines tailored launch support models\, including superuser networks and both on-site and virtual assistance\, reinforcing the principle that true success lies in empowering people through thoughtful change\, not just deploying new systems. \nLearning Objectives \n\nExplain the importance of governance\, leadership\, stakeholder engagement\, and sponsorship in supporting large-scale digital transformations in healthcare.\nDescribe effective stakeholder engagement strategies that ensure system design and implementation reflect the needs of patients and frontline users.\nIdentify key change management tools and approaches used to support readiness\, adoption\, and sustainability during CIS implementations.\nExplore launch support models—including the role of superusers\, hybrid assistance approaches and issue escalation frameworks\nSummarize the role of project management in coordinating resources\, managing risks\, and maintaining alignment across program priorities and timelines.
